On April 13, Playworks in Washington, D.C. had the fantastic opportunity to show off the work we do at the White House Easter Egg Roll. Some 30,000 kids, parents and other dignitaries showed up for this year's event, and most of them made their way through the Playworks basketball and soccer stations.
President Barack Obama was our most distinguished visitor. While he missed his first two shots, he did help a kid dunk at the basketball station. Vice President Joe Biden, when he learned what we do, said that recess was always his best subject in school. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, his wife and kids spent about an hour on the basketball court playing with our coaches.
Several professional athletes stopped by to help with stations including Etan Thomas, Swin Cash, Marisa Coleman, Nikki Blue and Renee Brown for basketball and Julie Foudy, Brianna Scurry, Abby Wambach, Devin McTavish and Ben Olsen for soccer.
